MICRODATA, A VALUABLE RESOURCE FOR RESEARCHERS

Image: PDA

A Confidentialised Unit Record File (CURF) is a file of responses to an ABS survey where specific identifying information about a person or organisation has been confidentialised. Each person’s or organisation's response is called a ‘unit record’ or ‘microdata’.

Microdata is the most detailed statistical information available from the ABS and is used widely by universities, government and private sector researchers and analysts. The community receives vital benefits from research conducted using this microdata. The ABS assists this by providing approved individuals with access to micro-level confidentialised data from a range of surveys for specific research purposes.

Over 150 CURFs are available from more than 35 ABS statistical collections. CURFs are available in different levels of detail with Basic CURFs available on CD-ROM and both Basic and Expanded CURFs available on the Remote Access Data Laboratory (RADL) or the ABS Site Data Laboratory (ABSDL).

The RADL is a secure online data query service that can be accessed by approved users via their desktop. The ABSDL a secure environment on ABS premises which provides authorised clients with supervised access to microdata.

Contact us for more information about CURFs, or go to the Microdata Entry Page.
