CIRCULATORY DISEASES AND CANCERS

The preceding sections present data based on the international standard of ranking leading causes of death based on research presented by the World Health Organization (WHO). It is also useful to present mortality data by the ICD-10 chapter level. As shown in the graph below, over the last 10 years the proportion of deaths due to Circulatory Diseases (I00-I99) has decreased from 37.6% in 2002 to 31.0% in 2011. Conversely, deaths due to Neoplasms (C00-D48) have increased from 28.7% in 2002 to 29.8% in 2011.

Footnote(s): (a) All causes of death data from 2006 onward are subject to a revisions process - once data for a reference year are 'final', they are no longer revised. Affected data in this table are: 2006-2009 (final), 2010 (revised), 2011 (preliminary). See Explanatory Notes 29-33 and Technical Notes, Causes of Death Revisions, 2006 in Causes of Death, Australia, 2010 (cat. 3303.0) and Causes of Death Revisions, 2009 and 2010 in this publication.
