SUMMARY OF OPERATIONS

At the end of June 2007, there were 2,047 not-for-profit organisations in Australia mainly engaged in providing business and professional association and union services.

Collectively, these organisations employed 22,485 people at the end of June 2007. Permanent full-time employees accounted for 75.7% (17,026 people) of total employment, permanent part-time employees 9.4% (2,109 people) and casuals 14.9% (3,351 people).

In addition to paid employees, there were 55,734 volunteers during the 2006-07 financial year.

Industry value added by these organisations was $1.5b.


SOURCES OF INCOME

During the 2006-07 financial year, not-for-profit business and professional associations and unions received $3.8b in income.

The graph below shows that the main source of income for these organisations was membership fees, which accounted for 51.5% ($2b) of total income.

Income from services accounted for 18.6% ($0.7b) of total income, investment income 7.0% ($0.3b), government funding 6.4% (0.2b) and income from related or affiliated organisations 6.3% ($0.2b).

EXPENSES

During the 2006-07 financial year, not-for-profit business and professional associations and unions incurred $3.6b in expenses.

The graph below shows that the main expense item for these organisations was labour costs, which accounted for 41.7% ($1.5b) of total expenses.

Purchases accounted for 11.8% ($0.4b) of total expenses and grants and other payments made to other organisations/businesses and individuals 5.2% ($0.2b).
