Purpose
To produce statistics on industrial disputes in Australia.

Description
Information is collected on the number of industrial disputes involving stoppages of work of 10 working days or more. Ten working days is equivalent to the amount of ordinary time worked by 10 people in one day, regardless of the length of stoppage. For example, 3,000 workers on strike for two hours would be counted as 750 working days lost (assuming they work an 8-hour day).

Reports of stoppages of work are obtained primarily from media scanning services, from trade journals, publications and newspapers. Statistics on industrial disputes are compiled mainly from data obtained from employers and employer associations, from trade unions and from reports of government authorities.

  • Number of disputes;
  • Number of employees involved;
  • Number of working days lost and working days lost per thousand employees;
  • Industry;
  • Cause and duration of dispute, and
  • Method of settlement.

Data are available for disputes in the transport and storage industries.

Geographic Coverage
Australia, States and Territories.

Frequency of Data Availability
Data are released monthly.

Historical Data
Industrial disputes data were collected annually from 1913 and monthly from 1959.
