INDUSTRY ANALYSIS

AGRICULTURE FORESTRY AND FISHING

In the Agriculture Forestry and Fishing industry, 180 businesses were foreign owned. These businesses accounted for 0.1% of all businesses in the industry, employing 6,000 people (1.2%) and contributing $1,114.1m (3.8%) to the industry’s IVA.

By country of origin, United States residents held the largest number of foreign owned businesses in the industry (16), followed by Japan (14) and New Zealand (10).

Of the foreign owned businesses in the industry, those businesses owned by United States residents employed 1,400 people (23.3%) and contributed $116.5m (10.5%) to IVA.

In terms of the 0-19 business size (by no. of employees) category (see Table 4a – Data cubes) there were 137 foreign owned businesses (76.1% of all foreign owned businesses in the industry) compared to 176,427 Australian owned businesses (98.5% of all Australian owned businesses in the industry). In terms of the 200 & more business size (by no. of employees) category, there were six foreign owned businesses (3.3% of all foreign owned businesses in the industry), in comparison to 95 Australian owned businesses (0.1% of all Australian owned businesses in the industry).


MINING

In the Mining industry, 474 businesses were foreign owned. These businesses accounted for 5.9% of all businesses in the industry, employing 40,500 people (22.8%) and contributing $38,975.2m (33.1%) to the industry’s IVA.

By country of origin, United States residents held the largest number of foreign owned businesses in the industry (69), followed by Canada (46) and United Kingdom (43).

Of the foreign owned businesses in the industry, those businesses owned by United States residents employed 14,000 people (34.6%) and contributed $25,656.7m (65.8%) to IVA.

In terms of the 0-19 business size (by no. of employees) category (see Table 4a – Data cubes) there were 336 foreign owned businesses (70.9% of all foreign owned businesses in the industry) compared to 7,119 Australian owned businesses (94.7% of all Australian owned businesses in the industry). In terms of the 200 & more business size (by no. of employees) category, there were 38 foreign owned businesses (8.0% of all foreign owned businesses in the industry), in comparison to 80 Australian owned businesses (1.1% of all Australian owned businesses in the industry).


MANUFACTURING

In the Manufacturing industry, 1,010 businesses were foreign owned. These businesses accounted for 1.2% of all businesses in the industry, employing 141,300 people (16.5%) and contributing $29,345.9m (29.5%) to the industry’s IVA.

By country of origin, United States residents held the largest number of foreign owned businesses in the industry (244), followed by New Zealand (77) and Japan (75).

Of the foreign owned businesses in the industry, those businesses owned by United States residents employed 40,500 people (28.7%) and contributed $11,173.6m (38.1%) to IVA.

In terms of the 0-19 business size (by no. of employees) category (see Table 4a – Data cubes) there were 438 foreign owned businesses (43.4% of all foreign owned businesses in the industry) compared to 76,766 Australian owned businesses (93.1% of all Australian owned businesses in the industry). In terms of the 200 & more business size (by no. of employees) category, there were 175 foreign owned businesses (17.3% of all foreign owned businesses in the industry), in comparison to 305 Australian owned businesses (0.4% of all Australian owned businesses in the industry).


ELECTRICITY, GAS WATER AND WASTE SERVICES

In the Electricity, Gas Water and Waste Services industry, 87 businesses were foreign owned. These businesses accounted for 1.5% of all businesses in the industry, employing 13,700 people (12.3%) and contributing $11,677.1 (25.1%) to the industry’s IVA.

By country of origin, both New Zealand and United States residents equally held the largest number of foreign owned businesses in the industry (each with 8), followed by both Germany and France (each with 7) and Hong Kong (6).

Of the foreign owned businesses in the industry, those businesses owned by Hong Kong residents employed 4100 people (29.9%) and contributed $4,452.2m (38.1%) to IVA.

In terms of the 0-19 business size (by no. of employees) category (see Table 4a – Data cubes) there were 62 foreign owned businesses (71.3% of all foreign owned businesses in the industry) compared to 5,499 Australian owned businesses (94.5% of all Australian owned businesses in the industry). In terms of the 200 & more business size (by no. of employees) category, there were 14 foreign owned businesses (16.1% of all foreign owned businesses in the industry), in comparison to 59 Australian owned businesses (1.0% of all Australian owned businesses in the industry).


CONSTRUCTION

In the Construction industry, 484 businesses were foreign owned. These businesses accounted for 0.1% of all businesses in the industry, employing 63,600 people (6.0%) and contributing $15,375.9m (13.3%) to the industry’s IVA.

By country of origin, Japanese residents held the largest number of foreign owned businesses in the industry (37), followed by United States (35) and United Kingdom (21).

Of the foreign owned businesses in the industry, those businesses owned by United States residents employed 14,100 people (22.2%) and contributed $2,624.5m (17.1%) to IVA.

In terms of the 0-19 business size (by no. of employees) category (see Table 4a – Data cubes) there were 362 foreign owned businesses (74.8% of all foreign owned businesses in the industry) compared to 339,917 Australian owned businesses (98.6% of all Australian owned businesses in the industry). In terms of the 200 & more business size (by no. of employees) category, there were 40 foreign owned businesses (8.3% of all foreign owned businesses in the industry), in comparison to 169 Australian owned businesses.


WHOLESALE TRADE

In the Wholesale Trade industry, 1,909 businesses were foreign owned. These businesses accounted for 2.5% of all businesses in the industry, employing 123,000 people (22.7%) and contributing $26,432.1m (42.8%) to the industry’s IVA.

By country of origin, United States residents held the largest number of foreign owned businesses in the industry (430), followed by Japan (142) and Germany (132).

Of the foreign owned businesses in the industry, those businesses owned by United States residents employed 35,900 people (29.2%) and contributed $6,526.2m (24.7%) to IVA.

In terms of the 0-19 business size (by no. of employees) category (see Table 4a – Data cubes) there were 1,084 foreign owned businesses (56.8% of all foreign owned businesses in the industry) compared to 71,191 Australian owned businesses (95.3% of all Australian owned businesses in the industry). In terms of the 200 & more business size (by no. of employees) category, there were 150 foreign owned businesses (7.9% of all foreign owned businesses in the industry), in comparison to 162 Australian owned businesses (0.2% of all Australian owned businesses in the industry).


RETAIL TRADE

In the Retail Trade industry, 396 businesses were foreign owned. These businesses accounted for 0.3% of all businesses in the industry, employing 66,200 people (5.1%) and contributing $8,010.4m (11.2%) to the industry’s IVA.

By country of origin, United States residents held the largest number of foreign owned businesses in the industry (73), followed by United Kingdom (27) and New Zealand (24).

Of the foreign owned businesses in the industry, those businesses owned by South Africa residents employed 13,800 (20.8%) people and contributed $1,229.4m (15.3%) to IVA.

In terms of the 0-19 business size (by no. of employees) category (see Table 4a – Data cubes) there were 241 foreign owned businesses (60.9% of all foreign owned businesses in the industry) compared to 125,358 Australian owned businesses (95.0% of all Australian owned businesses in the industry). In terms of the 200 & more business size (by no. of employees) category, there were 50 foreign owned businesses (12.6% of all foreign owned businesses in the industry), in comparison to 283 Australian owned businesses (0.2% of all Australian owned businesses in the industry).


ACCOMMODATION AND FOOD SERVICES

In the Accommodation and Food Services industry, 131 businesses were foreign owned. These businesses accounted for 0.1% of all businesses in the industry. Foreign owned businesses employed 72,400 people (7.5%) and contributing $5,190.5m (13.4%) to the industry’s IVA.

By country of origin, Singapore residents held the largest number of foreign owned businesses in the industry (20), followed by United States (15) and United Arab Emirates (7).

Of the foreign owned businesses in the industry, those businesses owned by United States residents employed 33,500 people (46.3%) and contributed $1,618.8m (31.2%) to IVA.

In terms of the 0-19 business size (by no. of employees) category (see Table 4a – Data cubes) there were 54 foreign owned businesses (41.2% of all foreign owned businesses in the industry) compared to 77,276 Australian owned businesses (88.5% of all Australian owned businesses in the industry). In terms of the 200 & more business size (by no. of employees) category, there were 25 foreign owned businesses (19.1% of all foreign owned businesses in the industry), in comparison to 372 Australian owned businesses (0.4% of all Australian owned businesses in the industry).


TRANSPORT POSTAL AND WAREHOUSING

In the Transport Postal and Warehousing industry, 369 businesses were foreign owned. These businesses accounted for 0.3% of all businesses in the industry employing 67,800 people (11.9%) and contributing $11,798.4m (16.9%) to the industry’s IVA.

By country of origin, United States residents held the largest number of foreign owned businesses in the industry (42), followed by Japan (28) and the United Kingdom (22).

Of the foreign owned businesses in the industry, those businesses owned by United States residents employed 7,100 people (10.5%) and contributed $983.3m (8.3%) to IVA.

In terms of the 0-19 business size (by no. of employees) category (see Table 4a – Data cubes) there were 195 foreign owned businesses (52.8% of all foreign owned businesses in the industry) compared to 124,487 Australian owned businesses (98.3% of all Australian owned businesses in the industry). INFORMATION MEDIA AND TELECOMMUNICATIONS

In the Information Media and Telecommunications industry, 303 businesses were foreign owned. These businesses accounted for 1.6% of all businesses in the industry, employing 33,100 people (19.7%) and contributing $6,563.3m (17.7%) to the industry’s IVA.

By country of origin, United States residents held the largest number of foreign owned businesses in the industry (113), followed by United Kingdom (32) and France (11).

Of the foreign owned businesses in the industry, those businesses owned by United States residents employed 13,000 people (39.3%) and contributed $2,356.9m (35.9%) to IVA.

In terms of the 0-19 business size (by no. of employees) category (see Table 4a – Data cubes) there were 201 foreign owned businesses (66.3% of all foreign owned businesses in the industry) compared to 18,547 Australian owned businesses (96.9% of all Australian owned businesses in the industry). In terms of the 200 & more business size (by no. of employees) category, there were 23 foreign owned businesses (7.6% of all foreign owned businesses in the industry), in comparison to 71 Australian owned businesses (0.4% of all Australian owned businesses in the industry).


FINANCIAL AND INSURANCE SERVICES

In the Financial and Insurance Services industry, 1,138 businesses were foreign owned. These businesses accounted for 0.6% of all businesses in the industry and employed 44,200 people (10.7%).

By country of origin, United States residents held the largest number of foreign owned businesses in the industry (248), followed by United Kingdom (93) and Japan (51).

Of the foreign owned businesses in the industry, those businesses owned by United States residents employed 15,500 people (35.1%).

In terms of the 0-19 business size (by no. of employees) category (see Table 4a – Data cubes) there were 881 foreign owned businesses (77.4% of all foreign owned businesses in the industry) compared to 182,038 Australian owned businesses (99.5% of all Australian owned businesses in the industry). In terms of the 200 & more business size (by no. of employees) category, there were 53 foreign owned businesses (4.7% of all foreign owned businesses in the industry), in comparison to 112 Australian owned businesses (0.1% of all Australian owned businesses in the industry).


RENTAL HIRING AND REAL ESTATE SERVICES

In the Rental Hiring and Real Estate Services industry, 687 businesses were foreign owned. These businesses accounted for 0.3% of all businesses in the industry, employing 28,300 people (7.1%) and contributing $9,607.7m (13.5%) to the industry’s IVA.

By country of origin, United Kingdom residents held the largest number of foreign owned businesses in the industry (82), followed by United States (66) and Singapore (39).

Of the foreign owned businesses in the industry, those businesses owned by United States residents employed 12,500 people (44.2%) and contributed $2,058.6m (21.4%) to the industry’s IVA.

PROFESSIONAL SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNICAL SERVICES

In the Professional Scientific and Technical Services industry, 1,604 businesses were foreign owned. These businesses accounted for 0.6% of all businesses in the industry, employing 115,700 people (12.0%) and contributing $27,592.7m (25.8%) to the industry’s IVA.

By country of origin, United States residents held the largest number of foreign owned businesses in the industry (435), followed by United Kingdom (184) and New Zealand (74).

Of the foreign owned businesses in the industry, those businesses owned by United States residents employed 55,800 people (48.2%) and contributed $10,701.5m (38.8%) to IVA.

ADMINISTRATIVE AND SUPPORT SERVICES

In the Administrative and Support Services industry, 356 businesses were foreign owned. These businesses accounted for 0.4% of all businesses in the industry, employing 98,800 people (11.8%) and contributing $19,689.2m (36.9%) to the industry’s IVA.

By country of origin, United States residents held the largest number of foreign owned businesses in the industry (76), followed by the United Kingdom (64) and Netherlands (13).

Of the foreign owned businesses in the industry, those businesses owned by United States residents employed 10,100 people (10.2%) and contributed $5,254.3m (26.7%) to IVA.

PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION AND SAFETY

In the Public Administration and Safety industry, 33 businesses were foreign owned. These businesses accounted for 0.5% of all businesses in the industry, employing 12,600 people (15.2%) and contributing $991.8m (18.2%) to the industry’s IVA.

In the Education and Training industry, 93 businesses were foreign owned. These businesses accounted for 0.4% of all businesses in the industry, employing 4,700 people (1.2%).

HEALTHCARE AND SOCIAL ASSISTANCE

In the Healthcare and Social Assistance industry, 77 businesses were foreign owned. These businesses employed 16,700 people (1.6%).

By country of origin, United States residents held the largest number of foreign owned businesses in the industry (12), followed by New Zealand (7).

Of the foreign owned businesses in the industry, those businesses owned by United States residents employed 200 people (1.2%).

In terms of the 0-19 business size (by no. of employees) category (see Table 4a – Data cubes) there were 52 foreign owned businesses (67.5% of all foreign owned businesses in the industry) compared to 112,824 Australian owned businesses (96.0% of all Australian owned businesses in the industry). ARTS AND RECREATION SERVICES

In the Arts and Recreation Services industry, 60 businesses were foreign owned. These businesses accounted for 0.2% of all businesses in the industry, employing 11,100 people (5.4%) and contributing $887.5m (7.3%) to the industry’s IVA.

In terms of the 0-19 business size (by no. of employees) category (see Table 4a – Data cubes) there were 40 foreign owned businesses (66.7% of all foreign owned businesses in the industry) compared to 25,164 Australian owned businesses (96.8% of all Australian owned businesses in the industry). In terms of the 200 & more business size (by no. of employees) category, there were seven foreign owned businesses (11.7% of all foreign owned businesses in the industry), in comparison to 69 Australian owned businesses (0.3% of all Australian owned businesses in the industry).


OTHER SERVICES

In the Other Services industry, 555 businesses were foreign owned. These businesses accounted for 0.8% of all businesses in the industry, employing 6,500 people (1.4%) and contributing $940.4m (3.2%) to the industry’s IVA.

By country of origin, United States residents held the largest number of foreign owned businesses in the industry (117), followed by the United Kingdom (63) and Japan (49).

Of the foreign owned businesses in the industry, those businesses owned by United States residents employed 3,500 people (53.8%) and contributed $385.6m (41%) to IVA.

In terms of the 0-19 business size (by no. of employees) category (see Table 4a – Data cubes) there were 430 foreign owned businesses (77.5% of all foreign owned businesses in the industry) compared to 70,711 Australian owned businesses (97.9% of all Australian owned businesses in the industry).
