ABOUT THIS RELEASE

Foreign Direct Investment statistics in Australia are collected and disseminated by the Australian Bureau of Statistics as part of the compilation of a full set of Balance of Payments (BOP) and International Investment Position (IIP) accounts. This is in contrast with the practice in many countries where BOP and IIP statistics are collected and compiled by the central bank. This paper describes the broad framework within which international investment data are collected and compiled in Australia and covers some of the more detailed definitions and interpretations of foreign direct investment, differentiates direct from portfolio investment and provides an interpretation of some of the terms and definitions in the international standards.

This paper describes data contained in the publication Balance of Payments and International Investment Position, Australia (Cat. No. 5302.0).
