DESCRIPTION

This survey provides information about the characteristics and experiences of jobseekers. Information is presented for people who had started a job for wages or salary (successful jobseekers), and those who had looked for, but failed to gain, a job (unsuccessful jobseekers). Issues covered include method of job attainment, duration of looking for work, whether job starters were out of work prior to starting a new job, and whether they had obtained a job in their preferred occupation. Estimates can be cross-classified by standard demographic characteristics such as age, sex, marital status, relationship in family and birthplace.

Data from this survey are used to assess labour market trends and to develop policies and programs aimed at helping unemployed people, including people with family responsibilities, find jobs.

SCOPE

Persons in scope of the Labour Force Survey who had started or looked for a job for wages or salary during the previous 12 months. Excludes persons in non-private dwellings. Since 1997, excludes persons living in some remote and sparsely settled parts of Australia.
