DESCRIPTION

This survey provides information about the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population of Australia on a wide range of areas of social concern including family and culture, health, education, work, income and housing, law and justice.
For selected items, the 2002 National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Survey can be used in conjunction with the 1994 National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Survey to provide comparisons of change over the intervening 8-year period and with the 2002 General Social Survey to provide comparisons at a similar point in time with the non-Indigenous population.

Data on education included in this survey can be cross-classified with items from other areas of social concern to explore different dimensions of wellbeing and multiple disadvantage. The following education data items are available:

  • Level of highest non-school qualification
  • Highest educational attainment
  • Main field of highest non-school qualification
  • Main field of highest educational attainment

Training
  • Vocational training in the last 12 months
  • Type of vocational training in the last 12 months

  • Relevance of training to employment

  • Main reason left school
