ABOUT THIS RELEASE

The lethal results of drug use, including both illicit substances and the misuse of legal medications, is an issue of major concern in Australian public policy. Drug-induced deaths are one measure of the impact of drug use, as well as providing an indicator for evaluating community and government responses to this issue.
This publication provides updated information about drug-induced deaths for the period 1991-2001. In particular, changes in drug-induced death rates between 1999 and 2001 are analysed. Information is presented by age, sex, state and whether the death was accidental or of suicidal intent. In addition detailed information is given regarding the types of drugs involved in deaths for 2001.
