Over-65's abound on mid-north coast

At 30 June 2000, 13% of the NSW population was aged 65 years or over, with the Mid-North Coast having 18% - the highest proportion of its population in this age-group - according to figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics today.

The proportion of the population aged 65 or more also exceeded 16% in Far West and Richmond-Tweed.

Sydney, with 12% of its population aged 65 and over, had the lowest proportion of people aged 65 and over.

With the exception of the Far West of NSW, coastal NSW generally had a lower proportion of children than inland NSW.

The Sydney region had the lowest proportion of people aged under 15 (20%), and North Western NSW had the highest proportion of children, with Brewarrina holding 31% of its population aged under 15 and 28% under 15 in Cobar.

Sydney was the fastest-growing area in NSW. Coastal areas were generally growing faster than inland areas. Newcastle (Inner) was the fastest-growing coastal area outside Sydney with a growth rate of 6.3% and Griffith had the fastest growth rate in inland NSW at 2.4%.
