ABS Releases Independent Privacy Impact Assessment

An independent Privacy Impact Assessment of the Census Data Enhancement Proposal was released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

The Assessment, the ABS' response to the Assessment and submissions to the proposal lodged by the Australian community are available on this site.

Head of the Census program, Paul Williams said that no decision on the proposal has been made.

"In making a decision, the ABS will weigh up the public benefits of the proposal against the privacy risks," he said.

"A decision by the ABS on the proposal is expected to be made in the next two months when the full content of the submissions received and the Privacy Impact Assessment have been analysed and taken into account. "

The central feature of the proposal involves enhancing the value of the 2006 Census of Population and Housing information for analysing changes over time, by combining it with future censuses.

As in past censuses, the ABS will destroy any records containing name and address information once census processing is completed.

Media Note: The proposal is fully detailed in the paper Enhancing the Population Census: Developing a Longitudinal View (cat.no. 2060.0) available on the ABS web site.
