OBJECTIVES

Effective statistical infrastructure is necessary to ensure the overall quality and accessibility of Australia’s official statistics. However, the significant investment required to maintain statistical infrastructure assets is often unrecognised and/or undervalued.

The objective of the ESI consultation was to understand the main statistical infrastructure opportunities and barriers underpinning the production and use of official statistics with a view to informing strategic initiatives (including the ABS transformation program) around modernising Australia’s statistical system.

Essential Statistical infrastructure includes several important components of Australia’s statistical system including:

  • procedures that enable statistical production activities,
  • conceptual standards, official classification structures, and various registers that are used in statistical production activities,
  • foundational assets of legislation, policies and governance that provide structure and organisation to the statistical system’s environment,
  • software applications that enable or support statistical production activities, and
  • skills and culture.
