Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) Work Patterns of Women was conducted in October 1991 in Victoria as a supplement to the Monthly Population Survey. The target population was women aged 15-69 years inclusive, excluding full-time students. The survey details their labour force status, breaks in employment in past 16 years and reasons, occupation, superannuation fund membership, reasons for not returning to work after a break (of three months or more), and activities of those not employed since 1975. The survey collects information by face-to-face interview from female usual residents of private dwellings in Victoria aged 15 to 69, excluding full-time students. Private dwellings are houses, flats, home units, caravans, garages, tents and other structures that are used as places of residence at the time of interview. Long-stay caravan parks are also included. These are distinct from special dwellings which include hotels, boarding schools, boarding houses and institutions. Residents of special dwellings are excluded.
The survey also excludes households which contain members of non-Australian defence forces stationed in Australia and diplomatic personnel of overseas governments. Conceptual framework The target population is women aged 15-69 years usually resident in Victoria in October 1991, excluding full-time students. The target population is divided into women who have been employed in Australia since 1975, and those who have not. Women who have been employed in Australia since 1975 are then divided into women who have had a break from employment (of three months or more) since 1975, and those who have not. Women who have had a break from employment since 1975 are then divided into women currently on a break from employment (of three months or more), women who left employment less than three months ago, and women currently employed. The total "women currently employed" category is composed on women who have not had a break from employment since 1975, and those who have had a break and are currently employed.
