    OVERVIEW
    The Input-Output tables provide information about the supply and use of goods and services and inter-industry flows for one financial year

    PURPOSE
    Used for providing annual benchmarks for the national accounts and for use as a standalone input into various economic models.

    SCOPE
    All industries except Private Households Employing Staff, for reference year 1996-97.

    DATA DETAIL

    Conceptual framework
    Provides a full articulation of the gross domestic product account within the national accounts. For each industry, inputs = outputs.
    For each commodity, supply = demand. Records the linkages between products and industries as well as industries and industries of the Australian economic system.

    Main outputs
    Supply table, Use table, Imports matrix, Reconciliation of Flows matrix, the Direct Requirements coefficients and the Leontieff inverse (Total Requirements coefficients). Note that the Make matrix and the Absorption matrix are also referred to as the Supply and Use tables.

    Frequency comments
    The I-O tables cover a period of one financial year. Tables were compiled at irregular intervals from 1958-59 until 1977-78, then annually from 1977-78 to 1983-84, then triennially until 1992-93, annually from 1992-93 to 1994-95, and then 1996-97.

    COLLECTION HISTORY
    This collection was started on an experimental basis for reference year 1958-59. The first production tables were for 1962-63, and then tables were compiled about every 5 years until annual tables started for 1977-78. After 1983-84, tables became triennial up to 1992-93 ,then they became annual up to 1994-95, after which the 1996-97 tables (the latest) were compiled.

    Data availability comments
    The latest available tables are for 1996-97. Generally the tables are released annually with a lag of 3.5 years. Current release strategy is being reviewed.
