NAME OF ORGANISATION
The Working Conditions survey was conducted in Victoria during October 1997. The survey provided information on the extent and ramifications of the trend away from traditional work practices, i.e. from permanent full-time work towards temporary part-time or casual work. It provides a description of the conditions under which respondents worked in the reference week, changes in the last five years, and reason for change. Information is cross-classified by a range of employment characteristics, such as full-time and part-time status, permanent and casual status, contract and non-contract working arrangements, occupation, industry and sex.
To assist State government in understanding changing workplace employment conditions, with relevance to developing appropriate employment policy.
Target population was persons aged 18 years and over who were employed as at October 1997 in Victoria. Sample was approximately 3,500 persons, using private dwellings in Victoria that were included in the Monthly Population Survey. Information was collected by personal interview of a household usual resident adult aged 18-65 years inclusive for one-eigth of the sample, and by telephone for seven-eigths of the sample.
Target population was employed persons aged 18 years and over, using the Monthly Population Survey frame. Victorians were asked about their current and past working conditions, including the reference week and the last five years.
Industry and occupation by whether permanent (self-employed, fixed term contract or other) or casual employee (fixed term contract or other) by full-time or part-time status; whether on an award, individual agreement, business collective agreement, industry collective agreement, or other by full-time or part-time status; employment type (self-employed, permanent, or casual) and reason for employment type and whether employment changed in last 5 years and reason for change by sex and whether full-time or part-time; current payment type (wage, hourly rate, contract, commission, or other) and whether payment type changed in past 5 years and reason for payment type change by sex and full-time or part-time status; current employment conditions (award, individual agreement, etc) and whether these changed in last 5 years and reason for change (promotion, workplace change, own choice, redundancy, or other) by sex and whether full-time or part-time; whether worked more than minimum hours and whether received fringe benefit and working hours and preference for more/less hours by sex by full-time or part-time status and whether permanent or casual.
Customised output tables are possible using survey variables cross-classified by demographic variables used in the Monthly Labour Force Survey.
Industry, occupation, labour force status, employment status, country of birth status, age, and sex.
Other concepts (summary)
Preferred form of employment, preferred type of payment, preferred working conditions, whether previous contract was with same employer, whether hourly rate of pay varies according to time of day or week, whether working conditions are considered more or less flexible and better or worse in past 5 years, whether consider more control over working conditions than 5 years ago, whether consider saving more than 5 years ago, and length of contract for employees.
