    OVERVIEW

    This survey collected information on work-related injuries and illnesses, the level of awareness of compensation schemes and the use of rehabilitation services by injured workers.

    PURPOSE

    The collected information on employment injuries and usage of workers compensation was necessary for the effective planning of compensation and rehabilitation programs for injured workers. The objectives of this survey were:

    • to estimate the actual incidence of injuries in the workplace
    • to assess the level to which workers are aware of their rights for workers compensation
    • to assess the extent to which workers compensation is sought by eligible injured workers
    • to examine why workers are not claiming workers compensation
    • to assess the extent to which rehabilitation services are being used by injured workers

    SCOPE

    Scope: The survey included all persons aged 15 years and over who were either currently working or had worked, for at least two weeks or more, in the last 12 months, except visitors to the selected dwelling.

    Coverage: Standard Labour Force coverage rules. The following are exclusions on coverage for the labour force:

    • members of the permanent defence forces;
    • certain diplomatic personnel of overseas governments, customarily excluded from census and estimated populations;
    • overseas residents in Australia;
    • members of non-Australian defence forces (and their dependants) stationed in Australia
