    OVERVIEW

The Music Survey collected information about the operation and financial performance of all businesses which had been identified as earning the majority of their income from one or more of the following -- record company operation, record distribution, operation of sound recording studios, music publishing, manufacture of recorded music media and management of musical artists. The results of the Music Survey provide information on the structure, activity and performance of businesses involved in the business of music in Australia.

    PURPOSE

The Music Survey was commissioned by the then Department of Communications and the Arts (now Communications, Information Technology and the Arts) so that it could obtain a comprehensive picture of the economic value of the music business in Australia. The information obtained has been used by the Department and various music business associations to assist in policy development and planning.

    SCOPE

The scope of the Music Survey includes all businesses which earn the majority of their income from one or more of the following -- record company operation, record distribution, operation of sound recording studios, music publishing, manufacture of recorded music media and management of musical artists.

The coverage of the Music Survey includes all businesses which were able to be identified as earning the majority of their income in the manner described above. These businesses were identified in the following way:

    1. A list of potentially in-scope businesses was created from several sources including the ABS Business Register, the Australasian Music Industry Directory, the Yellow Pages and association lists.
    2. A coverage survey form was sent to all potentially in-scope businesses.
    3. A final population frame was derived by discarding those businesses whose answers indicated that they were out of scope.
