The production of construction materials is basic to all building activity and consequently affects most parts of the economy. Buildings, roads and most services depend on the availability of construction materials and the local production of these materials is one way to control costs.

Production of construction materials takes place throughout Tasmania.

PRODUCTION OF CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS, Tasmania - 2000-01
Boral Construction MaterialsProduction totalled 712,000 tonnes, of which 48% was road making material.

Employment: 20 directly employed, 7 contractors.
Brambles Quarries Tasmania
Quarries at Birralee, Ridgley, Pipers River, Talisker and Western Junction in northern Tasmania produced 355,000 tonnes (including 123,000 tonnes of miscellaneous fill for domestic construction, 115,000 tonnes of road construction material base and sub base, 54,000 tonnes of aggregates for concrete and brick production and 46,000 tonnes of road surface finishing materials, aggregate and dust).

Caroline QuarriesThe Railton quarry produced 18,230 tonnes of silica sand and 850 tonnes of road gravel and sand

The Cradoc quarry produced 47,000 tonnes of road-making material and 17,000 tonnes of construction material.

Employment: up to 7 (including contractors)
Hobart Blue Metal IndustriesProduction comprised 227,900 tonnes of crushed rock, 18,400 tonnes of gravel and 6,000 tonnes of sand.

Employment: 18 and one contractor
Island Resources
The Scottsdale operation produced 74,000 tonnes. The main products were 16,000 tonnes of concrete sand, 15,000 tonnes of foundry sand and 18,000 tonnes of road gravel.

Pioneer Construction Materials Hobart Quarry
Operated at the Flagstaff Gully quarry

Employment: 11, including a contractor.
RNB Trading Pty Ltd (Sanbar Pty Ltd)

This company conducts a dry screening of dune sand operation on the site of the Males sand pit at South Arm.

Production comprised 54,960 tonnes of asphalt and concrete (screened) sand and 330 tonnes of filling and bedding (general) sand.

Stornoway Quarries Pty Ltd

Quarries at Frankford, Raeburn, Hunterston, Birralee and Misery Hill in northern Tasmania produced 187,000 tonnes.
