The unemployment rate is defined as the number of unemployed persons expressed as a percentage of those in the labour force (total employed and unemployed).

In 2003-04, the annual average unemployment rate for all persons in Tasmania was 6.9%, down from the 2002-03 figure of 8.8%. In 2003-04, the male unemployment rate was 7.6% and the female unemployment rate was 6.1%.
