  • Residential building approvals continued to rise steadily in January 2010, increasing by 1.0% in trend terms to 2,114, after increases of 1.7% in November and 1.1% in December 2009.
  • The January increase was driven by a 1.2% increase (trend) in approvals for single houses, the largest monthly rise of all states and territories.
  • Recent seasonally adjusted figures show greater volatility in building approvals, with an 8.3% fall in November followed by a 1.2% increase in December 2009 and a 3.0% increase in the month of January.

  • In 2008, the number of dwelling approvals in Western Australia fell for eleven consecutive months (trend terms), a decrease of 28% overall between January and December of that year. In early 2009, this downward trend was reversed, with thirteen consecutive monthly increases to January 2010, equating to a rise of 48% over that period.

  • Historically, the largest proportion of building approvals has related to private sector housing, accounting for over 78% of approvals (trend) in January 2010. Strong private sector building approvals growth over the last year (up 43%) has been the main driver of recent increases in total approvals.
