ABOUT THIS RELEASE

Describes the current requirements under the Census and Statistics Act 1905 and the Commonwealth Electoral Act 1918 in respect of the ABS population estimates to be provided to the Electoral Commissioner for use in determining representation of the states and territories in the House of Representatives. Also sets out the steps that have and will be taken by the Australian Bureau of Statistics and the Australian Statistician in ensuring transparency of the publication of the statistics that will be provided to the Electoral Commissioner for the next electoral determination, due November 2005.
